Displacing the displaced
By torrie Revell
It has been said that you can grade the quality of civilization by the way it treats its prisoners. If this were the case, America would get and “F”. Reasons to end the incessant and forced displacement of prisoners that the American judicial and prison systems and so readily signs off on, goes beyond the apparent emotional damage and delves into issues of responsibility, rehabilitation, mental health, recidivism, and connection to place. American must look to foreign countries for examples of successful and less damaging forms of incarceration such as the Kimberley region of Western Australia. I have included this piece of writing, which is my favorite portion of a larger investigative essay I wrote, in my anthology because this correctional facility it is in my home state and it was a big deal when it was introduced; it's success is exemplary. It also fits nicely with my theme because removing someone from their homeland and social support system can be one of the greatest sources of depression for prisoners. This model prison offers insight and a possible solution to the many instigators of incarcerated depression.
