"Mentally Ill Are Often Locked Up In Jails That Can't Help"
Laura Sullivan, Npr
When prisoner's with existing mental health issues such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, enter the prison system, fire is used to fight fire. At the moment prisons are the worst possible environment to send someone suffering from mental illness because prisons are simply ill-equipped to help them.
A great point is made in this NPR piece, when Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart explains the misalignment in closing down state-run mental hospitals due to their shameful conditions and operations, yet society willingly accepts putting the same people in jails and prisons. There is so much irony here. We are more advanced than this.
